Chiang Mai Mystery Food Illness Responsible for 4 Recent Deaths at Hotel

    Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai’s Downtown Inn is now infamous for a string of mysterious deaths over the last few weeks attributed to bizarre sudden deaths of several guests that are likely related to food poisoning, extreme bacteria levels or as yet some unknown agent or microbial contamination perhaps. In a case fit for CSI-Chiang Mai, the hotel has had 4 guests suddenly pass away within the last month … Needless to say we’re cancelling our reservations and boiling the keyboard …. Three of the guests were foreign tourists and the fourth was a Thai tour guide, all reportedly due to some form of food contamination as yet unknown.

Exactly where the food was prepared and whether sold directly by the hotel or somewhere nearby also remains unclear. Now the deaths of four people are no laughing matter and the possibility of further cases are dead serious (pardon our macabre humor), so we respect those grieving and are shocked at the sudden loss of their loved ones….. Conspiracy NewsFlash! … Yet, since no obvious case has since provided definitive clues, is it possible someone wanted to damage the hotel’s reputation and cause its loss of income due to the publicity somehow? Just conjecturing….

What is known is that no indications of murder or other foul play are known to be possibly considered by police, although strong similarities or unexplained coincidences exist. Police Lieutenant Col. Sawat Lakas of Chiang Mai Muang District said investigators are awaiting the results of post mortem autopsy examinations on 2 of the victims.

On Feb. 3rd, the first death of Thai tour guide Waraporn Yinginmahasaranont aged 47 was discovered near the bathroom of her room, who had suffered severe diarrhea prior to being found. On Feb. 18th, Sarah Carter 23, a New Zealand tourist also died from apparent food poisoning. Two friends with her also suffered food poisoning and all 3 had to be taken by hotel staff to the hospital where Carter died, while the other 2 recovered and have since left Thailand. The following night, 2 elderly foreign guests, George Everly and his wife Elean Everly suffered sudden death due to abnormally enlarged heart muscles which blocked arteries. Again the sudden loss of these people is tragic.

Is this reminiscent of some ‘Hotel Hell’ or what? Or does someone want the negative publicity and can murder really be ruled out? We don’t know anything other than it just appears to be too ‘coincidental’ for comfort, and of course the hotel has suffered terrible negative publicity. Sarah Carter and her friends were known to have brought outside food in to their rooms (barbecued pork and chicken), so there is as yet no clear implication the hotel is directly responsible for any deaths due to causes of food poisoning or contamination.

Where the food the others ate originated from hasn’t been revealed. The plot thickens, as they say, … as no traces of poison were discovered in the deceased victims’ stomachs, although clearly a first rate medical investigation CSI style is what is required … What are the odds of that happening …? I bet the families of the deceased would certainly like to know and the authorities with all their resources owe it to the public and all affected to responsibly do so at once.

I don’t believe it has to do with the hotel. We lost our beautiful Soraya weeks before these deaths even occurred. Same symptoms and same cause of death as Sarah Carter. She was with a friend and they both went out for sushi. We were told they had food poisoning, but food poisoning does not cause this in young healthy individuals. The Thai government is covering this up, but if we don’t push for a true investigation more lives will be lost! This is a tragedy and Thai officials are ok with calling it a coincidence! OUTRAGEOUS!

Thanks Rebecca… it sounds QUITe coincidental, and there was an investigation into other possible causes, but so far none has been established that we know about. .. could be a variety of causes, even a sick individual, but yet autopsies aren’t giving out clues as to what’s going on… Or as you say authorities aren’t letting on, and when it comes to the tourism biz, that comes as no surprise.. Sounds like a true CSI- Chiang Mai, and sorry to hear about your loved one, .. I’m not aware of the incident, could you provide a link to any story on the web or elsewhere it can be found?… Our sympathies. We do hope the truth and those repsonsible will be made public asap….

When I was in Chiangmai a few years ago, I saw people selling deep fry cockroaches at the road side. Could that be one of the source that we have to look into. The cockroaches may had contracted the poison before they were caught.

Let’s hope they were fresh and not exposed to pesticides prior to the deep fry, …. Foreign tourists wouldn’t eat them, esp. not young women, for sure!
Btw there are some rather gross looking bugs resembling cockroaches on sale here in Bangkok all the time, but they’re actually a beetle, and are popular, can be seen often around town, but I wouldn’t doubt it either…Thais love them
