    Northern/Eastern Bangkok

Maybe Time for Thai Voters to Seriously Reconsider Their Election Ballots… As weeping PM Yingluck Thursday concedes Bangkok flood situation has reached crisis level

Immigration Division 1 (Chaeng Wattana) will be serviced by some officers available only for emergency cases during October 27-31.

Water has encircled Rangsit’s Thammassat University while Disaster Emergency Center receives 50,000 calls a day…

224 factories in Lat Krabang Industrial Estate have been closed temporarily due to fear of floods

    The Soi Less Travelled....

Motorists Use Every Available Inch of Dry Ground for Emergency Parking

Commerce Minister Kittirat na Ranong is chairing a committee to float (pun intended) a proposal to support affected businesses and industries with soft loans and to upgrade workers’ skills with additional training….

Dept. of Irrigation is taking heat for using what many academics consider old fashioned, conventional methods in tackling such an unusually heavy volume of flood water….

Latest Poll: Thai Govt’s Flood Relief Operations Center (FROC) gets thumbs down, as 86% say flood information is unclear, confusing and more ( 87%) report its information is unreliable.

@ACSBKK: International Flood Help Center at FROC Don Muang Airport, with English speaking staff can be contacted at (02) 504-3027.

Elephants Prove They're Still Very Much In Charge

The Marines and the US. George Washington carrier group are arriving in the area with heavy choppers to drop relief supplies to hard hit areas while disaster prevention/management experts from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) are on the way to assess the situation and give recommendations….

The Fisheries Dept. is able to assist in crocodile captures, so if you have rogue crocs around, contact them at 081-607-6332….

U.S. Citizen Services at the U.S. Embassy is providing updates and the latest info on the situation on Twitter @ACSBKK

Meanwhile, the latest on the northern Bangkok inundation is that Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra is begging the Irrigation Department to help stop the flood waters swamping neighboring Pathum Thani from spilling into northern Bangkok. Mai Sai, Don Muang and Nonthaburi are now on the front lines, after Nava Nakhorn Estate was inundated yesterday…

“We’re concerned about Sai Mai and Don Muang districts along with areas in the eastern zone, so we’ll ask the Irrigation Department to close the sluice gate of

Upstream Areas of Bangkok Dump Huge Water Volume on Bangkok

Canal 1 everyday. We will beg daily until the water gate there is closed,” he said.

Don Muang Airport, which still services many cargo, military and domestic flights, is located in Don Muang district.

Sukhumbhand said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has also been trying to protect its area from floods by building an embankment along the Hok Wa Canal in Sai Mai. The Army has already been asked to help construct a one meter high sandbag barricade along a six kilometer stretch of this canal. The water in the canal had already risen by two centimeters a day.

Even without the runoff from storm flooded upper parts of the country, many Bangkok roads were submerged on Saturday night following a torrential

It's Another Rainy Night in Bangkok

downpour.”The rainfall in Bangkok was up to 154 millimeters on Saturday night,” Sukhumbhand said.

Since the beginning of 2011 until October 16, Bangkok has been pelted by 2.16m of rain, far more than usual.

“The good news is that the Banyan storm has already weakened into just a low pressure ridge but Saturday’s evening deluge was responsible for raising the water in many of Bangkok’s canals, he said. Flood prevention efforts were hastened on Saturday from Bang Na to Samut Prakarn’s Pak Nam district where a center median canal divides 2 directions of Sri Nakharin Rd. Dredging was done to ensure the rapid flow of water going into the Tha Chin River and also that Sri Nakharin Rd. wouldn’t be unusually flooded as the drainage along many of its sections is nearly non-existent.

“We are closely monitoring the situation, however, the city’s defenses have so far successfully saved its inner areas from floods, ” he said..

However, not all areas in Bangkok are protected by embankments and if runoff from Ayutthaya rages down without any control, many parts of the capital will be threatened, he added. The floodwalls range from 2.5 to three meters in height

Pathum Thani is now struggling with water from upstream as the water in nearby canals has almost reached the height of their embankments.

The campus was ready to move all flood victims taking shelter in the Gymnasium 1 building to its upper floor if it is inundated, she said.

Anon Antimanon, a volunteer at the university’s Rangsit Campus, which is a major evacuation center for flood refugees, said ”Our embankment was originally 4 meters above sea level, but now we’ve raised it to 6 meters,” Ang Rak and Premprachakorn canals behind the campus had overflowed according to Alisa Sahavacharin, assistant rector for student affairs at Thammasat University, said about the Rangsit Campus in Pathum Thani. “We believe the moats inside the campus will help,” she said, “Chiang Rak Road, which is just behind the campus, is now under about one and a half meters of floodwater,” he said.
