Flash Floods in Philippines, Boat Disaster in Indonesia Combine for Huge Death Toll

Flash floods devastated and killed hundreds in Cagayan de Oro — a city of more than 500,000 — and 144 in nearby Iligan, with more than 300,000 residents. The rest died in several other southern and central provinces, she said.

The areas are unaccustomed to serious storms, Benito Ramos, chief of the government’s Civil Defense Office, attributed the high casualties in Mindanao partly to the complacency of people because they are not in the usual path of storms, despite four days of warnings by officials that one was approaching.

He said that about 20,000 residents of the city had been affected and that evacuees  said the disaster killed more than 400 people while they slept, forcing hundreds of others to their rooftops and turning 2 coastal cities into muddy, debris-strewn waterways.

At least 436 were dead in the torrential storm and floods in Southern Mindanao  based on a body count from mortuaries, with many bodies unclaimed, indicating family either weren’t alive or able to retrieve relatives’ bodies.

Flash Flood Disaster in Mindanao Brings Huge Death Toll

20,000 soldiers are working to retrieve bodies, coordinate rescues and assist local communities with aid and evacuation efforts.

Tropical storm Washi hit the southern Philippines over the weekend, triggering massive flash floods, killing approximately 650 people and leaving many missing, and is expected to wreak havoc in southern Thailand tomorrow as it was forecast to move across the South China Sea and weaken before hitting the coast of Malaysia by Wednesday, said Wanchai Sak-udomchai, Director of the Meteorological Department’s office.

This would result in more torrential rains in southern Thailand, particularly coastal areas of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, and Phatthalung provinces, with rough seas expected in the Gulf of Thailand from tomorrow until Thursday, Mr Wanchai said.

A weather front was causing cold snaps of nighttime lows in upper Thailand and had combined with heavy rains in the lower South for days which triggered some flooding and landslides in several areas.

Boat Disaster in Indonesia’s East Java as Migrant Smuggling Ship Sinks in Rough Seas

While off the coast of east Java, a boat carrying illegal immigrants heading for Australia sank off the Indonesian island and over 300 people were missing with many feared dead, a senior emergency official said.

He said the passengers were believed to be mainly illegal migrants from countries including Iran and Afghanistan, with just 76 of the 380 people on board rescued, said Sahrul Arifin, head of emergency and logistics at the East Java Disaster Mitigation Center.

He said strong waves wrecked the ill-prepared, wooden boat about 55 miles out to sea late Saturday night.

Believing finding more survivors might be in vain, Arifin said”…Our search and rescue team began searching the waters around where the disaster took place, but we are now sending body bags to that area.”

Hundreds of Iranians and Others Perished in Rough Seas Yesterday

Many illegal immigrant and asylum- seeking boat people from the Middle East and Asia use Indonesia as a transit point en route to Australia.

Just how does one make money from blogs? How does one start it or go about it? Is there a specific way to do it? Just how does one make money from blogs in the first place? Where does one get started in this? Do you have to advertise and use your credit card? Are there any certain kinds of rules you have to follow? Do you have to set the blog up yourself or are there ones that help you set up it up? How do you get advertisers on your blog? Are people limited to the number of blogs online? How often do you get paid?. . Thanks for the help!.
